Now... In 3D!!!!

I am hooked, totally hooked. I finally had the chance to go to the movies on Monday, for the first time in a long while, and I went to see Open Season. Only I didn’t go to see it on the puny normal screen, I saw it in Imax 3-D, and I loved every second of it. Not that Open Season really makes an effort to stand out amongst the total glut of animated films these days, it is a decent flick and would have been hugs even five years ago but now gets lost in the seemingly weekly mess of cartoon flicks. What made it incredibly fun was the 3-D Imax.
I had gone to see Superman in 3-D with my dad a little while ago, and left a little soured because the projector broke down, although it led to an amazing afternoon listening to the guys trying to fix it (somehow the boneheads had managed to leave the microphone on that allowed them to tell us there was a problem and that they were working on it. They just never turned it off). So we got to hear things like, “Yeah… no I hit automatic start and then it just went funny and then… yeah… yeah… no I did that… what? What switch… OK, I did that… (loud clack and then a hum)…” and so on for 20 minutes. That happened during the trailers, and then again 90% of the way through the film which prompted my dad and I to leave and get two free passes, hence my return to see “Open Season”
Between this movie and Superman I have renewed love for the theatre experience. I feel like this must have been what it was like when movies first came out. The sense of wonder and excitement at what has now become commonplace. The 3-D is truly amazing, at points it felt like a ride, and I will definitely be going back for Happy Feet when that comes out in November. I guess there is a limited 3D release of Nightmare Before Christmas coming too, although I don’t have the crazy love for that movie that others do, but I could see the appeal of wanting to venture “into” that stop motion animated world. Seriously, if studios want to provide a unique movie going experience I believe 3D is the way to go. It took an otherwise run of the mill flick like Open Season and made it a lot of fun, fun that I couldn’t have at home and I love that. Even if it hadn’t been free I would have paid to see it and not felt at all ripped off. If you have been to Imax 3-D before you have to try it once, because I think you may be surprised at just how cool it really is.

When I heard parts of Superman Returns were gonna be in 3D, I was pissed that there's no theater in my little corner of the world that allows such technology .. I bet that plane crash Supes averted must have just been amazing!

Words cannot describe the feelings I had watching that scene. For the first time in 25 years I wondered where the Superman costume my mom made me was. I felt like I was 5 again with all the excitement and wonder.

have you ever been to disneyworld/land or universal studios? they have tonnes of 3D stuff and some of it is so good you just have to go back and watch it again and again... and again.
