Spring is here! Do you know how I can tell this where I live? Is it the flowers? Nope. Is it that the weather is perking up? Nope. Is it that I have noticed the youth suddenly paying more attention to each other? Nope.
I know it is spring because of the bugs who commit mass suicide around our house and the church. I have heard that Elephants have a place they go to die. By instinct they travel to a certain place where all the other elephants from their herd(flock? murder? clutch?) have gone before to pass on. Here at Zion it is bugs. The following bugs have local graveyards.
Pillbugs
Location: The stairwell heading up to the houses and the back field.
Number: 150 to 200
Appearance: Freakishly fast, over the course of a weekend all 150 bodies appeared all rolled up neatly in little deceased balls.
Ladybugs
Location: My hobby room in the upper level of our house.
Number: 30 to 40
Appearance: Hard to say as I am not up there every day. My guess as to the cause is that one of my hobbies is not collecting aphids which would eliminate their food source and therefore they starve.
Yellowjackets
Location: My wife's office in the upper level of our house (I know, weird right? The rooms are right across from each other and I have never found a yellowjacket in my room, or a Ladybug in hers!)
Number: 15-20
Appearance: Again, hard to say, but over the course of a week or so they show up. They havent yet this year but I expect they will. We never see live ones is the really weird part.
So there it is. Three insect graveyards in a small space!
