Epic Fail

Can we just admit something to ourselves as people trying to live our lives together in society. Can we admit that from time to time we are not only capable of failure but in fact we do actually fail at times? Last year our principal returned from a conference and said they had a discussion about changing the color of a marking pen from red to purple because red has taken on negative connotations and it makes the students feel like they are failing. This confused me, shouldn't we let someone know if they are failing? If someone is on the road to stupid town and not realizing the need to turn back shouldn't we tell them with a red X, the same red X we all received when we were in school. I also found out recently that it is now uncommon for a student to ever have to repeat a grade. You can repeat a class but repeating a grade is not really an option, and it would seem this is because we are worried about damaging their little psyches about failing. Doesn't this road ultimately lead to stupid people who are never wrong? I'm wrong all the time and it doesn't make me feel bad about myself or ruin my self-esteem. In fact, it's nice to know I'm not perfect, and that no one else is either. Recognition of this makes us cut each other slack when our screw ups involve our fellow neighbors and citizens. If I change lanes and don't see the guy to my left I can wave and beg for forgiveness, if I trip at the store it is the difference between a sympathetic look and people pointing at me and calling me a moron. Failure is not only an option in life, it is an inevitability, and I can either be a loser about it or admit that I am just like everybody else. You know where I learned that? In school, through red marks on my page and getting bad grades every now and again. In order to succeed you have to know you can fail.

A buddy introduced me to something recently call failblog and there you can see all kinds of people and things failing at all kinds of endeavours. Skateboarding, basic science (including a hilarious tirade on daylight savings being bad because that extra hour of sun is frying the earth), and all manner of silly things we all fail at from time to time. I would encourage you to visit the site, and to celebrate failure, because without we would have no way of knowing when we have succeeded, and how sweet those successes really are!

I check it daily...if not multiple times daily. Along with lolCats, lolDogs, lolCelebrities, lolPolitics, GraphJam, engrish...and I think that's all the sites listed at the top except the lookalikes, that one's dumb.
