I LOVE RAMBO….. SERIOUSLY. If you too are a fan of 80s action movies I hope you love it too. Cheesy speeches? Check. Bad guy you wanna see get killed really bad? Check. Horrific violence throughout the entire film!?! AMEN BROTHER! Before anything else I gotta say this film is violent… but to get the gist of what I mean you have to pronounce it VY-YO-LENT-AH! People are dismembered by gunfire, blown up, cut up, messed up, and every other kind of up in this movie. It is entertaining in a primal manly kind of way, this is not a film I see a lot of women liking but will appeal to the basest instincts in pretty much every red-blooded males heart. Like Rambo III this film tries to have a message and thankfully it doesn't get in the way too much because it doesn't really seem to make sense. Rambo III tried to show us the plight of the Afghani people during Russian occupation (which now puts another whole crazy spin on that movie let me tell ya! Who drove the Russians out of Afghanistan? Rambo… and some Afghani freedom fighters… oops.) This one takes place in Burma, which apparently is one of the most violent places in the world right now. There has been a civil war raging there for decades and the cruelty of the army and others is legendary and thus is a perfect setting for Rambo to take justice into his own hands. He becomes a force of nature in this one, along with a force of mercenaries who do help somewhat but ultimately become fodder.
You know what the best part of this one was though? Seeing Stallone back up on the screen. That was very cool. I went and saw the last Rocky film too and between these two movies Sly shows he still has it. A lot of people I talk to about both of these flicks say, "But he's like 60 or something, give it up man." Reality is until you see these films you cannot judge that. He has an iconic presence now, and more importantly he is actually a decent actor. Rambo has a character and he slides into the role completely. I just watched First Blood the other night before seeing the new one and the role is the same, the character is a natural progression. The same held true with Rocky for me. I think Stallone is a talented guy, and if I said he wrote and directed the new Rambo I suspect most would see it as a sad cry, but he has been writing and directing since the early 80s, he knows what he's doing and he's talented beyond belief.
So guys, leave the wife at home, get together, and go see Rambo and you'll see why killins' as easy as breathin'.
