I am up to my eyeballs in work so I will keep this brief.
I love the original material and the movie was very faithful to that, with one exception. I was far more brutal than I remember the comic being. The comic was violent to be sure, I just dont remember visualizing it quite so gory and man is this movie gory. The sex scene is also far more over done than the comic and leaves little to the imagination which is arguably the biggest problem with turning a comic book into a movie, especially one of this nature. It's fairly safe to say though that as a result my wife and many others that come to mind will likely never see the movie for these reasons even though the rest of the content is engrossing and interesting. The movie severely limits its own audience in my opinion. I mean, do you go to superhero movies expecting to have, in graphic detail, a very detailed view of a man having his arms sawed off while he is still alive? I didnt think so.
The other big difference was the ending which is completely different from the comic. I read a review which nailed it and it essentially said everybody ends up in the same place in the end but it isnt nearly as good a way to get there. It was like taking the freeway versus taking the scenic route and that bugged me a bit. Still, it was a faithful interpretation of the book and a lot of it was very very cool to see on the big screen. It is a superhero movie that makes you ponder what makes a hero a hero, it has an incredible sense of design and style that really make it feel like 1985 (the year in which the film is set) and ultimately it is an engrossing film.
I would recommend it to those who have the stomach for the violence, which is a shame really because I think it could have been just that much more.
