Here are some shows to check out this fall that are just starting. These are shows I have either checked out or will check out so don't tell me I left stuff off, I may just not watch it (like Prisonbreak):
90210 (CW) Sept. 2
Version 2.0 is decent although it very much reminds me that there is only so much teen angst that can be documented. There is lots of cool nostalgia and if they keep up the "where are they now" dynamic I will probably keep watching. Having Kelly Taylor back is cool since she was one of my first TV crushes, except now she has a kid and I feel old. Still seeing Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty interact again as Kelly and Donna was cool. If you watched the old one you may dig the new one. I am just no convinced the main part of the show is really anything different or special.
Bones (Fox) Sept. 3
Better than CSI in terms of character development and humor this is one of the best crime procedural dramas out there. The cases are interesting, the characters are very well done and this show frequently has us laughing. David Boreanaz is terrific as Sealey Booth and is partnered perfectly with Emily Deschanel as Temperance Brennan, the socially awkward and way to logical forensic anthropologist. Good stuff. If you like CSI you owe it to yourself to check out Bones.
Sons of Anarchy (FX) Sept. 3
Cool new biker show, much like Sopranoes but not nearly as much fowl language or nakedness. The storytelling is decent but it is the actors that really pull this one off. Ron Perlman is the head honcho, Charlie Hunnum (Lloyd from Undeclared for those who saw it) as Jacks, the heir to the throne. Katey Sagal as Jacks' mother and widow of the co-founder of the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club. All are good and very strong in their roles, and the story has a neo-Shakespearean feel to it. I liked it a lot, although if I had to nail it down I couldn't say why. This is one that may end up on the bubble for me.
Entourage (HBO) Sept. 7
The boys are back! This is a great show, but admittedly not for everyone. I have heard it talked about as a men's Sex in the City and I definitely see that dynamic at work here, but it isn't just Sex and the City with guys, it is that group of friends dynamic but a little more like guys actually are with each other as buddies. I was actually excited for this one to come back and it was cool to sit down and see what the characters had been up to in the last while.
True Blood (HBO) Sept. 7
Vampires have come out to the world and now live as a minority among us. The show is decent but laden with hamfisted comparisons to gay culture which makes sense in the context but is just so obvious it is nearly a dealbreaker for me, because subtext is meant to be SUBtext, underneath for me to discover. Some cool concepts that may keep me coming back is the notion that vampire blood makes people high, making them subject to attack by junkies, and the main girl (played by X-Men's Anna Paquin is a psychic who likes being around Vampires because she cant hear them. Pretty graphic at times this one is just OK for me at this point. I'm going to give it another episode before I decide.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Fox) Sept. 8
The ending of last night's premiers was amazing, I was completely surprised and giddy for what it may mean for the season. Regardless of its cinematic roots this show holds its own very well and has that cinematic intensity that 24 is so know for. I would highly recommend checking this out. The first season is out on DVD and is only 8 episodes, so its easy to catch up. If you even just like the movies you should dig this show.
Fringe (Fox) Sept. 9
A worthy successor to X-Files, maybe the first show that could legitimately say that. It deals with Fringe science, which is essentially stuff like teleportation, mind melding, that sort of thing but treated as a possibility. The first episode reminded me a bit of Firestarter, that old movie (based on a Stephen King novel) with Drew Barrymore that dealt with the government trying to give people mind powers. It has a decent creepy factor, and the acting is pretty good. The show is fairly high concept though so we'll have to see whether they can keep up the energy. This one has good pedigree, with JJ (Lost, Alias) Abrams producing and a couple of guys who wrote Transformers co-creating, so it has potential. The problem is show with that kind of potential often sink under their own weight. It has been hailed as a must watch by the TV gurus which also tends to be a bad sign.
Hole in the Wall (Fox) Sept. 9
Checked it out. Felt dumber for having seen it. Absolutely retarded on every conceivable level. AVOID!
Saturday Night Live (NBC) Sept. 13
It has gotten good again. Seriously.
House (Fox) Sept. 16
I know very little about what the writers have planned for this season. That said I hope its better than last season's frustrating arc that constantly tried to drive me away. There were moments I loved last season, and moments I completely and totally loathed. I may give up watching it if it doesn't get better.
Smallville (CW) Sept. 18
Doomsday? Miss Tess Macher? No Lex, no Lana? The producers who created the show have left? I have loved this show from day one, but I am seriously worried that this will be the season that makes the show remembered as "they should have stopped after 7"
Primeval (BBCA) Sept. 20
Like the new Doctor Who or Brit SciFi in general? This show is killer and a heck of a lot of fun. Basically rifts in time have opened and dinosaurs are coming through into present day. Thrills, intrique and terrific characters make this show worth checking out. The effects are great for a TV show and it should make any genre TV watcher happy.
Big Bang Theory (CBS) Sept. 22
Funniest new comedy of last season. Nerds are funny.
CSI Miami (CBS) Sept. 22
I know most have you have given up on H's posing and overacting by now, but I need to find out whether he was actually shot dead or not. I am pretty sure he isn't because I expect the twist to be that he is indeed a mannequin brought to life by a girl's imagination. Hey, this is CSI Miami would that really be THAT far fetched?
Heroes (NBC) Sept. 22
New Heroes? What a novel idea! I am excited for this season. Breckin Myer and Seth Green have signed on to be comic geeks who help a least one hero find their footing, this excites me. The producers of the show have vowed to wow us with a return to the action of the first season so I am expecting big things.
How I Met Your Mother (CBS) Sept. 22
The best comedy you likely arent watching. If you miss friends this is the most worthy successor of any of the clones that tried and failed. It is consistently funny and has some great gags.
CSI: NY (CBS) Sept. 24
The best, in my opinion, of the 3. Good cast, tight writing, thrilling stories, just very very consistent and exciting.
Knight Rider (NBC) Sept. 24
Oh man, I hope this is good. My fingers, toes, and other things are crossed that this is decent. Val Kilmer is KITT!!? Did you know that, isn't it a little mind blowing?
ER (NBC) Sept. 25
The final season may make me watch, but this show got real terrible after Carter left. I am scared to go back.
Grey's Anatomy (ABC) Sept. 25
This show annoys me, my wife loves it.
Office (NBC) Sept. 25
This show simply cannot get any better. I mean, I'm sure it will, I just cant imagine how. I had tears rolling down my face in the finale I was laughing so hard. I just hope it can last.
Survivor (CBS) Sept. 25
Now in HD! The only reason I will be checking it out this season.
Amazing Race (CBS) Sept. 28
A team of Comic geeks! A team of guys that look and act like the dudes from Superbad! The only reasons I want to see this! The will likely get eliminated right away because this game does not involve D20 dice!
Dexter (Showtime) Sept. 28
I have written this show up before. The first episode sets up some pretty compelling stuff for the season but I am not convinced yet that it will be as driving a show as it has been with the set up they have. I want more intensity!
Little Britain USA (HBO) Sept. 28
Wow this could be really good or completely stupid.
Simpsons (Fox) Sept. 28
This is the show that never ends… it just goes on and on my friends.
Numb3rs (CBS) Oct. 3
Great show. Learn math while you solve crimes! Actually this show is awesome for keeping a breakneck pace as well as having very very good character development. C and I have watched it from day 1 and I am still hooked.
CSI (CBS) Oct. 9
The only thing bad about this is waiting until October to see new ones. Didja hear? Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus from the Matrix trilogy) is replacing William (Grissom) Petersen as the shows lead and he will have a deep dark secret that involves to many letters in his DNA, a killer secret if you will. I am stoked.
SNL Weekend Update Thursday (NBC) Oct. 9
Again, this could be great, or could totally suck.
My Own Worst Enemy (NBC) Oct. 13
Christian Slater as a Jekyll and Hyde spy. Could be interesting, I will be checking out the pilot.
South Park (CC) Oct. 15
Sweet! New episodes of the show I love but feel guilty about loving.
Crusoe (NBC) Oct. 17
I like this better when it was called LOST! ZING!
30 Rock (NBC) Oct. 30
Liz Lemon is awesome. I have a crush on Tina Fey. This makes me feel old.
Whew! That is it! Thankfully. Any shows I missed you dig every week. What are you lookin forward to this season?
