In a world where Don LaFontaine is gone..

Let me guess you have never heard of Don LaFontaine... but I will bet you anything you know who he is. No? Watch this then come back.

Don LaFontaine died this week at the age of 68. For me, he is as much a part of my childhood love of movies as the films themselves. He coined the "in a world/in a time" line in so so many trailers and is an icon that I am going to miss. His trailer made the world bigger, more fantastic than you thought it was. I have actually had conversations where we wondered aloud what a guy with a voice like that looked like, and sadly I didnt know until he died. I think I always thought deep down that he must be a computer or something because no one could have a voice so rich and resonating. His voice is the voice I hear when I read God in the Old Testament believe it or not. He has had that much of an impact on me. I've never met him, but every time I sit down in a theater, I am going to miss "that guy" a bit. I will likely show my kids his trailers when I tell them about "the movie trailer guy".

Below is a trailer for Jerry Seinfeld's "Comedian". It pokes fun of the whole movie trailer voiceover thing and I think its something a guy like Don LaFontaine would appreciate, so here it is:
