Finishing the Fight...

I stood in line, I was there right at midnight to get my copy of Halo 3! I got caught up in the hype and it was a lot of fun.

Generally, as excited as I get about new movies and stuff I am rarely a line up early, first opportunity kind of guy. I went to the first showing of Superman Returns when it came out and that was so worth it. This, this was a lot of fun though. Brent and I went at about 11:00 where there were about 100 people or so in line, by the time they started letting folks into the store there were maybe 200… it was pretty cool.

Brent and I met this kid who completely hilarious. He just started blabbing away to us and very much reminded me of Gavin from Kids in the Hall, asking funny questions and not really listening to the answers. He made us guess his name. The best laugh for Brent was when he announced he was going to a concert in a couple of days… Def Leppard. I said, “Really, I’m going to that show too! How come you’re going to that?” He looked at me like I was stupid or something, “They are like my favorite band!” Brent starting laughing pretty hard, I think shocked that a kid that young had the exact same favorite band as me. We talked Def Lep for a bit, I had to suss out whether he was telling me the truth so I quizzed him on my fave groups, it was awesome! The time went by pretty quick as a result and it wasn’t long before we were being herded (MOOOO) into the store. I had preordered my copy and was ushered to the left. Brent convinced me to buy a limited edition controller, and I bought the guide (yes, I know it sounds pansy but I like guides OK!).

Which brings me to a rather large irritation I have with Future Shop staff. I know you work for commission OK, but if you do nothing to help me at all whatsoever, you do NOT deserve commission as you have not earned it. Placing a sticker with your number on it on my controller while you ask if I found everything I needed is not service, it is filling your pockets. Actually its just certain guys who work there, the rest are OK. I practically live at Future Shop, I like to just walk around and look at tech stuff, and what annoys me is when I find something completely on my own and some guy struts up, takes a vague interest in my purchase and places a sticker on my item like a pigeon crapping on a statue. You get commission for answering questions, being helpful, taking an interest in my technology needs. If you see me carrying a product to the till you are too late man sorry. You are officially useless to me and I don’t need you for any reason at all. I love nothing more than taking that sticker off and putting it in my pocket, and I did so on Monday night too. I would have loved to give commission to the games guy who is usually there and very very helpful to me. He actually takes the time to figure out whether they have something in stock, when it will be in if it isn’t and all that stuff. He’s great, but he wasn’t around unfortunately. Bye bye sticker.

I got some great swag with the game for preordering and being a Scot I love free anything… what’s that a free dirty diaper with purchase? Sign me up! A free piece of paper with old gum stuck to it? Sweet…. Well not really but I do loves me some swag. So I got a free hat, a free shirt, a free game (that I will likely never play) and the experience of being there! It was a good time all around. The funny thing is I didn’t even play the game till the next afternoon and was completely bagged all day, go figure.
Incidentally, the game is completely awesome and worth every single penny. I cant wait to play online with friends for months to come! Good stuff.

WILL UPDATE WITH PICS LATER TODAY

Actually, when Best Buy purchased Future Shop several years ago, their employees were no longer on commission as the employees at Best Buy aren't.

What I have noticed is that while the Future Shop employees were annoying while on commission, they are now totally useless and never around when you need them.

At least that has been my experience. I now shop at EB Games because those guys were hilarious on Tuesday morning after having not slept all night because of Halo 3. And they let me upgrade from the Limited Edition to the Legenday Edition, eventhough thet didn't have enough copies. They figured some parent wouldn't paying 75 dollars less for little Johnny's video game.

Yeah, I was told by a guy there though that certain departments worked on commission still. Not sure why it would be different, but they certainly act like they are working for commission at other times, making sure they walk with me to the till and entering their employee number. So I'm not sure what to make of it.

"Brent convinced me to buy a limited edition controller,"

A-hem...excuse me? I was walking around and I believe your words to me were "Hey, you wanna grab me one of those controllers?" You bought the controller completely free of my influence bub.

However, after that, I did try to sell you on pretty much everything else :)
