Pavlov's Hammer

I discovered something yesterday that I need to share. It isn’t that deep of a thing, but it is definitely sub-conscious. I had the pleasure of going to one of the local high schools last night to catch a play, one of my favorites “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde. The wit and pacing of the dialog is pretty tough, and I was impressed to even hear that high school kids would try to take it on. One of our youth played Gwendolyn Fairfax and did an amazing job, as did they all, I was very impressed. I laughed a lot which was good, some of the things I think people were befuddled as to why (there is a segment in which Algernon and Earnest are talking and there is mention of newspaper critics being uneducated, which made me laugh because I have no doubt this is a reference to the fact that the author was not well like by said critics, and his way of jabbing them was slamming them in front of an audience.)
Anyway, my love of this play and my love of pop culture had a startling clash last night. See, I don’t just like pop culture, I bathe in it on a regular basis. Memorable movie lines spring to my head as I go through life as they see fit. It has become automatic, the lines just pop in to say hello as moments of private levity. The same is also true of song lyrics, as was the case last night, when Earnest tells Algernon to “ring the bell” (for the servant), the line that popped into my head, in the middle of a play written 112 years ago?

School’s in sucka! * sigh *

I've always suspected that deep down you're just a superdope homeboy from the Oaktown.
