You may be wondering to yourself… why Jack Burton… who is Jack Burton? Well, let me tell you. Jack Burton is my hero. He appears in the movie Big Trouble in Little China, one of my favorite movies of all time. There are so many reasons to love this flick it isn’t even funny. It is highly quotable, has Matrixy action far before that was even a thing, Chinese mythology, soooo good. However, the best thing about the movie is its “hero”. I say “hero” because Jack is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, nor does he really have the wits to handle all the crazy situations that happen to him. What he does have is enough bravado and self-confidence to mask all those other inadequacies. He has no problem trying to punch out the Chinese god of Lightning, he just doesn’t realize you can’t just punch out the Chinese god of Lightning. I think I love Jack Burton because I think he is the type of hero I would be if I were put into those same circumstances. I would go in armed with wisecracks and a gun and up knocked out when the time comes (this is what is so great about this movie, in the climax Jack runs into a room full of bad guys for the big final battle, shoots the gun into the air… and knocks himself out for most of the important parts of it, and when he does wake up his fighting style would at best be described as clumsy.) Plus he has a cool t-shirt… His name has become one of my e-mail addresses, my Xbox 360 gamertag (which I am particularly proud of every time I play with a stranger who greets me with a quote), and now my blogger name. It is hard to really describe the love I have for this flick, in fact I think I just figured out what I am doing this afternoon…
Do you have any “heroes”? That is people who you consider heroic but for reasons that make sense only to you?
