She blinded me with science

Day 4

Today was a much slower day thank goodness. We slept in (although my body still ached from the day previous), and decided to head over to the museum of Science and Industry, kind of like Science World only totally massive on every scale. The thing that blows me away about these places is their sheer size. Nothing like this exists in Canada, most of these buildings were put up in the late 1800’s and are just too beautiful to describe.

The exhibits were where I started to peter out though. A lot of it seemed like things I had seen before, much of it geared towards kids. I loved the U-boat though. Within this museum is an original WWII German Submarine. It was incredible. So far my only real disappointment is that the interior tours were sold out for the day. I really wanted to see the inside of that thing, but no such luck. Oh well, I got to see the inner workings of a torpedo (mostly battery inside surprisingly) and learn a bit more about the subs. One thing is for sure, it took a special kind of person to stay sane in those things.

We took in an Omnimax show, which came with the Citypass. It was about Greece, the cinematography was beautiful, and I fell asleep… again. I am like Abe Simpson all of a sudden.

After that we wandered some more. I saw a train set that made me totally drool. Totally massive, for sure the biggest one I have ever seen by a long shot. I saw warplanes hanging from the ceiling like they were models. We snuck a peek through the curtain at the Da Vinci exhibit which looked like a huge rip-off for the money so we were glad we didn’t go. The museum was awesome, a top notch experience all around. We were getting peopled out though so we head back to the hotel, sharing a cab with a couple of women who asked, which was nice, but now that I think about it they kind of stiffed us.

The best part of this trip has been the time spent with Candace. It has been a great time for us to reconnect and really rely on each other, and it has reminded me of just how blessed I am by her. I love spending time with my wife, and that we can joke and enjoy our time knowing that the other is there for us. This trip wouldn’t be as full of laughs and enjoyment without her and I love that.

We decided to stay local for supper and ate at Mrs. Parks again. I had the roast duck (wish I had the lobster now, it was the same price), and Candace had a salad. I was a good, short day and exactly what we needed.

Tomorrow was going to be promising, House of Blues Gospel brunch and the Art Institute. I can’t wait.

We toured around inside the U-boat when we were there in '96. If you had made it in, you would've found it mighty cramped. I think the average submariner was 5'2"

I'm so happy to see some stuff on Chicago that's not Oprah-related. We will be there next week...it is our last stop before we hit Windsor!
