You ever have one of those moments where you laugh at the most inappropriate time? I had one last night and thank goodness only my wife was there to see it (although I suppose, via this entry, you will be too). One of those news updates came on between shows last night and the top story (it was a channel from Halifax) was about a woman who found dead in the trunk of a car.
“Wow!” you might say, “Even I didn’t think he was that insensitive.” But that wasn’t all. What made me laugh is that the reporter went on to say that after like three days they finally ruled out suicide and were looking at a homicide investigation. Seriously, think about that for a moment. I didn’t laugh because the woman was dead, nor do I yet know all of the facts surrounding the case and all of its circumstances. I laughed at that statement because of how it struck me at the moment. It took DAYS!?! to figure out this was not a suicide. I mean, wouldn’t you sort of suspect foul play the moment you opened the trunk and realized there was a body next to the golf clubs? Do people actually feel that a relatively painless way to end their misery is by locking themselves in the trunk of a car?
This is not to diminish the pain of the event, if anything it is more a comment on how reporting events can make things unintentionally weird and funny. They could have prepared me first, filled me in a little more on the details, and you can bet I will find out more. I hope they find the person who did it, justice needs to be served, especially now that they have figured out she didn’t do this terrible thing to herself.
