Forgotten Flicks #2
If you are a child of the 80's...let me clarify... if you were a boy in the 80's hopefully you got to go through your ninja phase, because that was one of the best phases of all. Watching movies about these guys who are secretive about so skilled that they can throw these little star things so they nail a guy right between the eyes and make them scream like a little girl before they fall cross eye to the ground.
What I love about the above movie is its sheer stupidity, even the tag line shows how unaware it is of its own silliness. A ninja who is an American? I feel much better now knowing that this mystic art is now in the hands of an America. God be praised! Now really, doesn't it just make you wonder how long it's going to take for this guy to screw it up. I mean his last name is Dudikoff for crying out loud. He has the word "dude" in his last name, do you believe for a second THAT guy is going to be a ninja???
That being said this movie is a whopper of an 80's genre flick, the kind you watch with your friends and mock all night long, tears of laughter running down your face. Sooo good.
To be fair I should include a totally awesome example of really good Ninja action. In the late 70's and early 80's Sho Kosugi was the MAN when it came to Ninja movies.
Pray for Death is totally awesome. This guy moves with his family to America and opens up a shop. Shortly after this, a nondescript gang of... we'll call them... ne'er do wells... try to extort money from him and long story short they end up dead!
Turns out this was a bad move on the part of the ne'er do wells as the shopkeeper also happens to be a deadly freakin assassin! Soon there's stars flyin around, tire spikes, nunchuks (mmmm.... nunchuks) and the ne'er do wells? The ne'er again do well. The only down side is as good as the acting is, Ninja dude's accent is really really thick, so when he says the title line more like, "Play for Dess" but it works... seriously you should check this one out.
NINJA VANISH!

So were they forgotten with good reason, or could of they just been not memorable movies.
I guess the overall theme of these entries is that they were forgotten by me, and yet I have fond memories surrounding them. I guess in a way the movie is not really the whole thing, but remembering being young in the 80's and what these movies led to. Although I gotta say, Pray for Death is still wicked fun if you see it that way. Me, I watch serious thinkworthy movie when I am feeling philosophical but I also love going MST3K when I get the chance, mmmm..... cheese.
